Visited a historic church in Charleston and noticed their brickwork from the 1700s

Last month I was down in Charleston for a job and walked past St. Michael's Church. The old brickwork really caught my eye. Some of those bricks were laid in a Flemish bond pattern that you just don't see on modern jobs anymore. I spent a good 20 minutes just looking at how tight the joints were and how straight the courses stayed after almost 300 years. Has anyone else studied old brickwork on historic buildings and picked up a technique you actually use today?

Drove past that same church last fall and had to pull over and walk back. The way they laid those bricks with the dark headers popping out against the red stretchers is something else. Been trying to copy that exact bond pattern on some of my own restoration work but man, those old timers had way steadier hands than me.
