DAE hear people say hobbies need to be productive and just want to scream

I was at a laundromat in Cleveland last week and this guy next to me saw me knitting and asked what I was making to sell. I said nothing, it's just for me, and he goes "so what's the point of doing it then?" I spent 3 dollars on the yarn at a garage sale and I've been working on the same scarf for 2 months because I like the feel of it. How do you all deal with folks who think a hobby only counts if it makes money or a finished product?
