Got roasted in my hiking group for using newspaper as fire starter during a rainy trip
Last month on a group hike near Asheville, someone told me newspaper is useless when everything is wet and to save money by collecting dry pine needles in a ziplock before I leave. I switched to that method and honestly the pine needles catch way faster and cost zero dollars. Anyone else get a cheap tip that totally changed their outdoor game?

Yo, YES. Taylor nailed it with the wool socks thing. I made the same switch a few years back and it's honestly a game changer. Cotton is basically a sponge that sucks the warmth right out of you once it gets damp, which is always gonna happen if you're hiking hard. Wool keeps you warm even when it's wet and you can wear them for days without them stinking too bad. I tell everyone I know to ditch the cotton socks for wool, especially on any trip where you're gonna be out more than a day.
