Is it better to learn a cheap hobby the "right" way first or just wing it?

I was talking to my buddy Dave last week while we were trying to fix up an old bike with zip ties and duct tape. He said I should watch a tutorial first, but I argued that figuring stuff out on your own is half the fun and saves you from spending money on tools you might not need. Now I'm second guessing myself because his way might mean less mistakes and less wasted materials. What do you all think, do you jump in blind or plan ahead when you're broke?

Yeah exactly, "the chaos is half the fun" is so true. I tried learning guitar from tabs once and it just killed the whole vibe compared to when I just messed around and made up my own stuff.

Hold up, is this really that deep lol? You're fixing a bike with zip ties and duct tape, it's not like you're building a rocket. Half the fun of cheap hobbies is the chaos, man. Watching tutorials can kill the vibe and make it feel like homework, plus you end up overthinking everything. If you mess up, who cares? You're broke anyway, so the stakes are basically zero. Dave probably watches five videos before he opens a can of beans, just do what feels right.
