Just watched my $3 goodwill ukulele snap a string mid-song at a campfire jam

I was at this tiny park near my apartment in St. Paul about two weeks ago, just strumming along with some folks I met online. Right as I hit a chord on a borrowed song, the G string just went ping and flew off into the dark. Everyone laughed (which was nice) but I had no spare strings on me and zero cash. I ended up making a temporary string out of some fishing line I found in my backpack. It sounded kinda twangy and weird but it held for the rest of the night. Has anyone else tried weird hack repairs like that?
