Library card unlocked a free music streaming service I didn't know existed

I was about to cancel my Spotify subscription because I just can't afford it right now... then a librarian at the downtown branch told me they have a partnership with Freegal. You get 3 free song downloads per week just with your library card. I downloaded 12 songs this month and it cost me zero dollars. Has anyone else found a hidden perk like this from their local library?

They actually just changed how Freegal works in a lot of library systems. It used to be unlimited streaming like Spotify but now most libraries got rid of that part and it's only the 3 downloads per week. Still a good deal but people get disappointed when they find out they can't just stream whatever they want all month. You gotta watch your weekly limit or you'll run out quick and have to wait till Sunday night to get more. Also just so you know, those downloaded songs are yours to keep forever even if you cancel your library card later which is the real hidden gem. I've got a whole folder of old blues and jazz albums I grabbed over a year ago that still play fine on my phone.

Wait, so those downloaded songs are actually DRM-free and you can keep them forever? I thought all that library streaming stuff had expiration dates attached. How do you even get them onto your phone from the app, is it just a direct download or do you have to go through some computer transfer process first?
