Library holds vs. free ebook apps: which actually saves you more time?

So I tried to read a popular book for free last month. I put a hold on it at my local library's digital system. It said 8 week wait. I thought okay whatever. Then I checked Libby and it said 12 weeks. But I also have the Hoopla app which didn't have it at all. I tried Project Gutenberg but that's just old stuff. I spent like 2 hours just looking for one free copy. Then my friend says just use one of those sketchy free ebook sites but I don't trust them. So now I'm stuck. Is it worth waiting months for a library hold or do you guys just move on to something else? How long have you actually waited for a popular book through the library?

Put the hold in and forgot about it until my library email came six weeks later. By then I'd already bought the audiobook on sale and was halfway through. My "to be read" pile is basically a memorial to books I no longer care about. At this rate, I'll get access to the book around the same time my kids graduate high school.

Yeah just put the hold in and forget about it. Read something else while you wait.
