My sketchbook got ruined in the rain last week and now I'm actually glad about it

I was walking home from the library in Portland last Tuesday and got caught in that sudden downpour. My cheap spiral sketchbook I'd been using for 6 months turned into a soggy mess with all my pencil drawings smudged beyond fixing. I was about to toss it but decided to peel apart the pages and use them as collage material for a new project. Now I'm doing mixed media stuff with magazine clippings and it's way more fun plus zero cost. Has anyone else had a hobby item fail and end up finding a better use for it?
