The thrift store chess set vs the $50 tournament board

Found a beat up wooden chess set at Goodwill for $4, pieces were missing a pawn and a rook so I subbed in a bottle cap and a button. Played my buddy last Friday and honestly the janky setup made it way more fun, we were cracking up every time the cap slid off. Then he brought over his fancy tournament board and it felt stiff, like we were at a library or something. Has anyone else found that broken or mismatched gear actually makes a hobby better than the proper stuff?

Ever notice how the worn out stuff always ends up having more personality? It's like that old skateboard with the chipped deck that you actually trust more than the shiny new one, because you know exactly how it's gonna slide or catch. The bottle cap and button aren't just placeholders, they're part of the story now. You can't get that from a perfect set, no matter how nice the wood smells.
