Thought I needed expensive sketchbooks until I tried printing on junk mail

I used to think you had to have that thick, expensive paper to draw anything decent. But last month I grabbed a stack of old envelopes and flyers from the recycling bin at work. Gesso'd a few and drew right on the printed side, and honestly the texture is kind of cool. Cost me zero dollars and I'm actually using up stuff I'd just throw away. Anybody else use random trash for their art projects?

My buddy Jake once made an entire zine out of those thin pizza place menus they shove under your door. He just drew on the blank side with a ballpoint pen and the paper had this weird greaseproof feel that made the ink smudge in a cool way. Honestly half the fun is figuring out how to work with whatever weird paper you find, it forces you to be more creative than if you had perfect supplies.
