Warning: cheap hobbies are way better in theory than in practice, or am I wrong?
Last weekend I dragged my roommate to a free urban foraging walk in Portland, and we spent 2 hours learning to spot dandelion greens and oyster mushrooms near the river. She loved it and now wants to do it every Saturday, but I keep thinking about how we still had to buy $12 in bus fare and a $6 knife to cut anything. Part of me says free stuff like this is the whole point of being broke and still having fun, but another part thinks the travel costs and gear add up until it's not really free at all. So which is it, are free local hobbies actually saving us anything, or are we just fooling ourselves while our wallets still feel it?
