Appreciation post: The great potato price panic of my local grocery store

People keep buying the 5 pound bags for $4 when the 10 pound bags are right there for $5, and I've seen it happen three times this week. Anyone else notice a weird price gap like that on a staple item?

My local store had the same thing with onions last month. A lot of people just don't have the space or need for ten pounds of anything. It makes sense to buy the smaller bag if you live alone.

Actually the smaller bag isnt always a better deal per pound. I checked the math at my store once and the 5 pound bag was $0.49 a pound but the 10 pound bag was $0.79 a pound. So in that case the bigger bag was actually worse value wise. They do that sometimes to trick people into buying the smaller one. You gotta look at the unit price on the shelf tag.

Unbelievable! That's some serious math they're avoiding for an extra five pounds of potatoes. I guess the bigger bag just looks like too much commitment.
