Used to believe it was just my bad cooking skills. My old stove's one working burner would either boil soup into cement or leave it cold. @skylerc86 is right about old kitchens. That uneven heat turned a simple lentil soup into a burnt, watery mess every single time. Never got a decent meal out of that place.

Wait, you had a stove with only ONE working burner? That's not just an old kitchen, that's a full-on cooking nightmare. Trying to make a whole meal with a single heat source sounds impossible.
