Heard a guy at the hardware store talking about his grocery bill

I was picking up some nails yesterday and overheard a man telling the cashier his family's food costs went up by almost eighty dollars a month. He said they started buying a whole chicken every week instead of just breasts. It got me thinking, so I tried it. I roasted one on Sunday, had sandwiches Monday, and made soup from the bones on Tuesday. That one chicken gave us three meals for about seven bucks total. Has anyone else found a cheap cut of meat that stretches that far?

I mean, a pork shoulder is like that too. I got one on sale for ten bucks, made pulled pork in the slow cooker. That gave us dinner, then leftovers for tacos, and I froze some for a quick meal later. It feels like a win when you can make it last.

Honestly, it's the only way to shop now. That whole chicken trick is a classic. It's like @claire_fisher41 said with the pork shoulder, you get a big cheap piece and make it work for days. I've been doing the same with a big pot of chili using cheaper ground turkey. It feels less like getting ripped off at the store when you can turn one thing into three meals.
