I used to buy pre-made sauce jars for $5 each until I tried making my own with canned tomatoes

For about two years I was grabbing those Rao's jars at the store because they tasted good, but it was killing my grocery budget at $5 a pop. Last month I picked up a big can of crushed tomatoes for $1.50 and added garlic and oregano I already had, and now I get three times the sauce for half the price. Has anyone else found a cheap staple they wished they'd switched over sooner?

I was the same way with salad dressing. Store bought was three or four dollars a bottle and it would be gone in a week. Then my wife started shaking up olive oil, vinegar, and a little mustard in a jar and I could not believe how simple it was. Tastes better too. Now I feel silly for spending all that money on something I could have made in thirty seconds. It is funny how we just get stuck in a habit of buying things without thinking.
