My 99 cent rice cooker died mid dinner, the backup plan cost me $1.47

Last Tuesday I got home late and threw rice in my old 3 cup cooker, the one I've had since 2019. Five minutes before it should have clicked to warm, the whole thing just stopped. No smoke, no smell, just dead. Rice was still hard and watery. I had black beans already simmering and no way to salvage the main carb. So I grabbed the bag of instant rice I keep for emergencies, that was 99 cents for the whole bag, boiled two cups of water on the stove and tossed in about a dollar's worth. Took 12 minutes but dinner happened. The weird part is I actually liked the texture better than the cooker version. Now I'm wondering if I should just ditch the electric one and do stovetop forever since I'm already washing a pot for the beans anyway. Anyone else had a backup meal trick save a night when you were dead set on a specific recipe and the gear failed?
