My grandma's $5 casserole feeds me for a week now
I remember when my grandma used to make this ground beef and rice casserole back in 2008 with stuff she got on sale. Back then a pound of ground beef was like $2.50 and a bag of rice was under a dollar. Now I'm lucky to find ground beef under $5 and rice has doubled in price. I still make the same recipe but I had to swap half the beef for lentils to keep it under $10 total. Anyone else adjusting old family recipes cause of prices going up?

yeah that hits hard. my family has this old mac and cheese recipe that used to be like $6 to make with real cheddar and good pasta and now it's closer to $12 just for the cheese alone. I started mixing in some canned pumpkin puree to stretch the cheese sauce and honestly nobody even noticed the difference. it's kind of wild how we're all becoming amateur recipe designers just to keep eating the same comfort foods.

Oh man, the lentil swap is real. I started doing that with my chili last year. Half the meat, add a can of black beans and some corn. Tastes different but still good. My aunt used to make this hamburger helper style dish with cream of mushroom soup and egg noodles. Now I use the store brand soup and frozen veggies instead of fresh. Still tastes like childhood somehow. Weird how we're all doing math in our heads at the grocery store now.

The canned pumpkin in mac and cheese is genius honestly, I gotta try that. My mom's old enchilada recipe used to be cheap with those $1.50 cans of enchilada sauce and a $3 block of cheddar but now that same block is pushing $8 near me. I started making my own enchilada sauce from tomato paste and chili powder just to cut costs and it actually tastes better somehow. We're all out here doing math homework every time we walk down the grocery aisle now.
