My neighbor's comment about dented cans finally got to me

I always bought the dented cans at the grocery store because they were 30% off, figuring a little dent doesn't matter. Then my neighbor said she used to do that until a friend at the health department told her about micro-tears letting bacteria in. Has anyone actually gotten sick from dented cans or is this just overblown?
