My rice cooker lid seal gave out and ruined a $10 batch of beans
Last Tuesday I started a big pot of dried black beans for meal prep, left it in the rice cooker on slow cook mode. Came back four hours later and the whole counter was flooded with bean water because the rubber seal had cracked. The beans got mushy and I had to toss the whole thing, that was 2 pounds of dried beans I bought for $10 at the bulk store. I tried cleaning the seal and putting it back but it just leaked again. Now I'm stuck using a regular pot until I can find a replacement gasket online. Has anyone else had a rice cooker seal fail on them unexpectedly?

That seal failure is a real nuisance and I've noticed a pattern where the rubber parts on small appliances seem to be the weak link these days. A few years back you could buy a toaster or coffee maker and the gaskets and seals would last a decade. Now they seem to crack or warp after a year or two. It's like manufacturers know they can save a few cents on cheaper materials and count on you having to replace the whole unit when the seal goes instead of just fixing it. My rice cooker lid has a rubber ring that's starting to look dry and I'm already mentally preparing for the same mess you dealt with.
