Took me 3 years to realize I was overcooking my rice

I always had mushy, sticky rice and thought that's just how it was. Then my neighbor saw me cooking it and pointed out I wasn't rinsing it first, which was washing off all that extra starch. Has anyone else had a basic cooking step they just completely missed?

Three years? Man, that's rough, but is it really that deep? So you weren't rinsing your rice and it was sticky. Big deal. A lot of people eat sticky rice on purpose, it's literally a whole cuisine. I guarantee you still ate the rice and it filled you up just fine. Unless you were trying to win a Michelin star, I don't think slightly clingy grains are a life crisis. Maybe just turn down the heat next time and move on.

Nah man, cooking rice is a simple skill and missing that step for three years is just frustrating, not a crisis.
