A bookstore clerk's comment made me rethink my monthly spreads

Last Tuesday I was buying a new notebook at Powell's and the clerk saw my old one sticking out of my bag. She said, 'You know, your future self doesn't care about pretty, they care about findable.' That got me thinking about how I was spending 2 hours each month designing cover pages. I switched to a plain index at the front of each month, just listing page numbers for each topic. Now I flip to what I need in under 10 seconds instead of hunting through 30 pages of doodles. Anyone else ditch the fancy layouts for pure function?
