Hot take: I think the minimalist monthly spread is overhyped
My friend Sarah told me to stick with just a calendar and a task list for my bullet journal, but after three months I felt bored and stopped using it. I added some color and weekly habit trackers, and now I actually fill the whole thing out. Has anyone else scrapped the "keep it simple" advice and seen better results?

My July 2023 setup was the first time I fully ignored all that advice about keeping it bare bones. I used a full page for a mood thermometer and another for weekly habit dots, and it looked nothing like the clean Instagram spreads. My handwriting is messy and I stick stickers everywhere, but that's the reason I actually use it now. I found that when I let myself go wild with markers and different layouts, the journal became less of a chore and more of a fun little project each month.

Wow that's exactly how I felt when I stopped trying to make my hiking trail map perfect and just started drawing zigzag lines everywhere.
