Serious question, I spent $80 on a fancy fountain pen for my bullet journal

I thought a smooth writing tool would make me journal more, but honestly it's been a pain. The ink smears on my favorite paper and I'm always worried about dropping it. On the other hand, my friend says her $5 gel pen works perfectly and she fills a page every morning. Did I just waste my money, or is there a trick to making expensive pens work for daily use?

Totally get that! I used to chase the fancy gear too, but a pen you actually use is never a waste.

Pick one good pen you really like and stick with it. You stop worrying about gear and just write more. That focus makes a bigger difference than any fancy purchase.
