Warning: I was drawing every single line with a ruler and it was killing my setup time
My weekly spreads used to take me almost 40 minutes because I ruled every line with a metal ruler and a fine liner, and half the time the lines were still crooked. About 3 months ago I switched to a stencil for my grids and just freehand the rest, and my setup dropped to 12 minutes flat. I also quit doing a full month page and only lay out one week at a time on Sunday nights at the kitchen table. The stencil lines are cleaner than anything I ever did by hand, which honestly stung a little. Does anyone else skip the ruler entirely, or am I the only one who owns 4 stencils now?
The part about stencil lines being cleaner than hand drawn ones isn't always true. It depends on the stencil and the pen. Cheap plastic stencils with thin slots let the nib wiggle, so you get wobbly lines anyway, just faster wobbly lines. I have a metal grid stencil and it only works right if I hold it down hard with one hand and use a fine tip that fits the slot snug, otherwise the pen catches the edge and jumps. So yeah, stencils save time, but they're not automatically cleaner. Took me a while to figure out which pen worked with which stencil.
