I finally visited that fancy butcher shop in Portland everyone raves about

Went to Laurelhurst Market last weekend and honestly I don't get the hype. Their dry-aged ribeyes were $32 a pound and tasted fine but nothing special. My guy at the local meat market sells me the same quality for $18 and will actually talk through what cut works for what. Am I missing something or are these trendy shops just charging for the name?

Are you really that pressed about a steak? It's just meat at the end of the day. People get all worked up over where they buy their food like it's some kind of status thing. You got a good deal at your local place, they got a fancy sign and a line out the door. Sounds like you both got what you wanted. No need to turn it into a whole thing.

...but here's the thing I've learned from way too many grill sessions with picky friends. It's not about the steak itself, it's about the whole experience around it (which is why your point actually kinda misses the mark). I've been to both types of places - the high-end butcher with the paper hats and the random grocery store meat counter. My advice? Just keep a mental list of what each place does well, and don't stress about turning it into some grand moral stand. Like, I grab my everyday cuts from the local spot but if I'm cooking for someone who really cares, I'll hit the fancy place just to keep the peace. Saves you the headache of debating it every single time.
