Debate: drill bits vs hole saws for stucco penetrations

After a job in Tucson where my hole saw caught the wire mesh and tore a 6 inch gash in the stucco, I'm wondering if drill bits are the safer option. What do you guys use for exterior runs through stucco and why?

Stucco always fights back when you least expect it.

My buddy Mike tried a bit in Phoenix and it still snagged the wire, just a smaller tear.
