I used to think tone generators were only for tough jobs. A messed up line changed my mind.

Yeah, a bad phone line changed my mind too. Thought these tools were just for big jobs. Had a simple setup where one wire was crossed in the box. Used the tone generator to find it in seconds. Now I keep it handy for any cable issue, even small ones. Saves a lot of headache.

In my old apartment building, I watched three different techs fail with tone generators because the signal bled through every wall. They're not some magic fix for small jobs either. I've had way better luck just using a cheap multimeter and following the wiring diagram step by step. For most residential stuff, those fancy tools just add cost and confusion. I only call someone with proper tracing gear if it's a full building outage now.
