My close call with a mislabeled riser cable
I was running a new line in an old building and grabbed a cable from the bundle. It was marked for TV, but when I toned it, it had phone signal. This could have messed up the whole floor's service. I fixed the label and used the right cable. Now I tone every line first, and it saves me from big mistakes.

Scary stuff! You can never trust old labels in those buildings. They fade or get swapped over time, so toning first is the only safe move.

Used to just go by the panel labels and hope for the best. Got burned real bad last year tracing a circuit that was marked wrong, took out a whole server rack. Now my toner is the first tool out of the bag, no exceptions. That old trust is completely gone.

Seriously, how old was that building? I've seen labels from the 80s still hanging on, but they're always wrong. Did you have to check the whole bundle after that, or just the one cable?
