That old timer who told me to stop using hammer-on connectors was 100% right
I had this crusty 30 year veteran named Joe tell me to quit using those hammer-on coax connectors about 6 months ago on a job in Tacoma. I laughed it off because I'd been using them for 2 years and thought they were fine. Well, last week I had to go back to 3 different houses because the connectors were failing after just 8 months. Joe even showed me his crimp tool and how clean the connection was compared to my hammered ones. So I finally bought the crimper and a bag of decent connectors for $40. Has anyone else had issues with those hammer-on fittings long term or was I just doing them wrong?

The hammer-on connectors just need a clean square cut on the cable and a steady hand. I've got ones on a install I did back in 2019 that still pass signal fine. Joe's not wrong about crimpers being better for production work, but it's not like the hammer-ons are junk if you prep them right. Bulk of the failures I see are from people mangling the cable jacket or not pushing them on straight.

Did I buy a crimper today or just order another round of hammer-ons to test my bad luck?
