My buddy's 5-minute rant about extension cord loops fixed my entire server rack

He watched me zip-tie every cable tight against the rack and said 'you're choking them, leave some slack so you can actually pull a device out without unplugging the whole row,' and now after redoing all 48 cables with service loops I can swap a switch in under 2 minutes instead of the 15 it took last Tuesday, has anyone else had to learn the hard way that neat and tight are not the same thing?

Man, that hits home so hard. My first big rack build was the same way, cables so tight they looked like guitar strings, and every single time I needed to move a drive I was cussing up a storm. Finally had a buddy come over and point out that a straight, tight bundle is useless if you have to unwrap the whole mess to get at one connector. Now I leave a little U-shaped loop at the end of every cable, just enough to grab and pull. It looks a bit less like a magazine photo, but my hands and my patience are way better off. Swapping a failed PSU took me maybe three minutes last week, and that used to be a twenty minute ordeal with a flashlight and a screwdriver in my teeth.
