Rant: my cable raceway popped off the wall 3 days after I installed it
Cheap adhesive gave out on a Saturday morning around 9am and dumped 8 cables behind my desk in Austin. What's the actual trick for getting those sticky strips to hold, do I need to sand the wall first or just buy the screw mount ones?

What kind of wall are you dealing with, painted drywall or something slicker like tile or paneling? That makes a huge difference with those strips, they hate anything with texture or dust on it. Also did you clean the wall with rubbing alcohol first or just stick them straight on?
