I thought propping trays on milk crates was the only way to build a ramp until a freshman showed me the upside down tray fold trick
For like two months straight I was building lunch tray ramps by stacking trays on top of milk crates in the cafeteria, and they always slid apart halfway through. Last Tuesday at Lincoln Middle School I watched this freshman named Marcus just flip a tray upside down, fold the two short ends under, and lock the next tray's lip into those folds so the whole thing made a stable ramp without any crates at all. I felt so dumb standing there with my three crates. The folded edges give you a little channel that grips the tray above it, so the ramp holds together even when you roll a tangerine down it at full speed. I tried it myself and got a six tray ramp to stay up for a solid two minutes before the lunch lady yelled at us. The part that really got me was how low it sits to the table, so nothing tips over when you push something heavy. Has anyone else tried folding the ends instead of stacking on crates, and does it still work if your trays are the flimsy ones with rounded corners?
Whoa, wait, you got a six tray ramp to hold for two whole minutes? That blows my mind because I always figured the folded ends would just pop loose the second you put any weight on them. In my experience the flimsy trays with rounded corners are the worst since the lips barely catch, so you might have to double fold them or just grab the sturdier ones.
