Back in 2010 I thought those cheap plastic lens spanner wrenches were a total joke.
I bought a generic one for about $12 to try on a stuck filter ring, fully expecting it to snap. That little tool has now gotten me out of more jams than I can count, and I still have it in my kit today. What's one piece of gear you wrote off that actually earned its keep?

Totally get that, and it points to a bigger thing I see all the time. We're trained to believe the expensive, name-brand stuff is the only gear that works, but the basic tool that just does its job is often the real hero. It's a good reminder that simple and reliable beats fancy and complicated most days of the week. My own version of that was a plain metal lens spud I bought for a few bucks that has saved so many filters.

My old harbor freight torque wrench still works perfectly.

Right? Same here. I got a harbor freight torque wrench like six years ago and it’s still dead on, never had a single issue with it. @troy439 you nailed it with that spud thing, simple gear that just works is always the best. I’ve got an old cheap multimeter from them too that’s been my go-to for years, never bothered upgrading because it still does everything I need. Something about those no-frills tools that just keep going.
