Finally caved and bought a proper lens spanner for $45

I spent years using needle nose pliers and praying I wouldn't slip (which I did, twice). After gouging a retaining ring on a Canon FD 50mm last week, I ordered a proper spanner from a guy on eBay and it paid for itself in one clean repair. Anyone else put off buying the right tool until you wreck something?

Oh man, I feel this so hard! Did the exact same thing with a Zeiss lens and a cheap pair of scissors. Took a chunk out of the ring and had to buy a replacement that cost more than the spanner would have. The eBay seller who makes them by hand is the way to go, those Chinese ones are hit or miss. One tip if you haven't already, get the ones with the pointed tips instead of the flat ones, they grip better on those tiny little notches. I also thread a small rubber band between the tips to add a bit of tension so it doesn't slip off. Once you have the real tool you wonder how you ever fixed anything without it.
