Had $2,000 worth of Leica glass slide off my workbench Tuesday

I was cleaning a 50mm Summicron and bumped my elbow into a 35mm that was sitting on a cloth. Both hit the concrete floor and the 35mm cracked its rear element. Has anyone else had a drop like this ruin your whole week?

Did your lens have a filter on it? My buddy knocked a 50mm off a table once and the filter took the hit, save the front element.

Filters are a waste of money most of the time. They add two more glass surfaces to collect dust and flare, and they degrade image quality for no real benefit. @lucas498, your buddy got lucky but that doesn't mean a filter is a smart investment for everyone.
