I cleaned a 1974 Pentax K2 mirror box with a cotton swab for years. Stopped after a speck of cotton got stuck on the focus screen and cost me a $150 replacement.

That's a tough lesson. I learned the hard way too after a cotton fiber got stuck on my own focus screen. I switched to using a small, soft brush made for camera sensors, the kind with a blower bulb on the end. A few gentle puffs of air first, then a careful sweep with the clean brush. For anything stubborn, I use pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes, but I never let them touch the screen itself, just the mirror.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I've used a cotton swab on way older gear and never had a problem. @reese_perry6 sounds like you were just unlucky, or maybe that screen was already damaged.
