Just realized my Nikon F2 squeal was the mirror box, not the shutter, after 3 wrong guesses
Picked up a rough Nikon F2 at a yard sale in Dayton for $40 last month. The shutter sounded fine but it had this awful chirp at slow speeds. I figured the shutter brake was dried out, so I pulled the baseplate and cleaned it. Still chirped. Tried oiling the mirror pivot and it got worse for a day. Third guess, I actually put a stethoscope on the body and traced it to the mirror box return spring rubbing the frame. A tiny dab of watch oil on a toothpick at the spring hook killed the noise. Two rolls later and it's still silent. Anyone else chase a squeal around a body for days before finding it in the wrong place?
