Blew $140 on a 'waterproof' tent from a big box store in Tacoma and got soaked in a drizzle
Back when I started camping around 2015, I figured any tent with a rainfly would keep me dry, so I grabbed a cheap 4-person dome at a big box store in Tacoma for $140 and felt pretty smart about it. First trip out to Rainier in September, it drizzled for maybe two hours and I woke up in a puddle with my sleeping bag soaked through. Took it back and the guy at the counter said the 1200mm coating was basically a suggestion, not a promise, which nobody told me at checkout. Now I check the hydrostatic head number before I buy anything with a rainfly. What specs do you all actually check before trusting a tent, or do you just go by the brand?
