Hit exactly 7.3 miles on a trail I've hiked for years, turns out my old GPS was off by half a mile the whole time.
Why would a GPS unit drift that much over time, has anyone else noticed their old devices getting less accurate after a few years of heavy use?

Actually the GPS receiver itself doesn't degrade, the satellites just get better and your old unit's maps might have bugs.

Man I totally used to think the exact opposite. I had this old Garmin from like 2012 and I swore the GPS chip was just getting worse over time because it would lose signal under trees and take forever to lock on. But you're right, that's probably just the map data being outdated and the satellite constellation being different back then. Now I think about it, my phone's GPS works way better than that old unit but that's probably because it uses newer satellite signals and better software processing. So yeah you changed my mind on this one, the hardware doesn't really wear out like that. Appreciate the explanation.
