My cheap headlamp almost got me lost in the dark
Bought a $15 no-name headlamp for a trip to the Adirondacks. The battery door popped open on the trail, leaving me with just my phone light. Anyone have a reliable brand under $50?

Oh man, that battery door popping open is the worst. I used to grab whatever was cheapest at the big box store, thinking a light was a light. Having a fail in total darkness on a trail is a quick way to change your mind. I've had good luck with Black Diamond for years now, their basic models are solid and stay under your budget.

Black Diamond's fine, but @abby_king22, Petzl just lasts longer in my bag.

Tell me about it. Nothing like that moment of panic when your headlamp flicks off and you're standing there like a fool trying to figure out which way is up. Abby_king22, you nailed it with the cheap store stuff. I learned that lesson the hard way on a camping trip where I ended up walking into a tree, which was both embarrassing and painful. Black Diamond has treated me well too, but I always keep a spare battery pack in my bag just in case.
