Why I flipped on cheap sleeping pads after one night at Big Bend

I used to think any old foam pad was fine, but last March I hit Big Bend and woke up frozen at 4am with my hips screaming. A buddy let me try his insulated inflatable that weighed like 2 pounds and I slept great the next night. Now I'm shopping for one around $80 to $120, anyone else had a similar wake up call with their pad?

Woke up at 3am in Joshua Tree last fall feeling like a human pancake that got left on the griddle too long. My cheap foam pad had this fun game where every time I rolled over, it slid out from under me like a greased-up turtle. Ended up sleeping on my jacket for the last two hours and swore off bargain bin sleeping gear right then. Now I'm eyeballing one of those self-inflating ones too, but I keep telling myself my back will forgive me eventually.
