Just realized my winch hook was frayed for 2 seasons

Last weekend near Thunder Bay, my buddy pointed out the cable on my winch had snapped strands before I even used it to pull his stuck side-by-side out of the mud. I checked it for rust but never looked close at the actual hook and connection point, which was the real weak link. Anyone else had a close call with winch cable wear that you only caught by chance?
