My winch cable snapped on a trail near Sudbury last month

I was pulling my buddy's stuck Polaris out of a mud hole and the cable frayed and broke under load, so now I'm switching to a synthetic rope but has anyone else had a steel cable fail on them like that?

Heard synthetic rope is safer though, less whip back if it snaps on you.

My buddy @faithbaker is right about synthetic rope being safer. I saw a video on YouTube where a steel cable snapped on a winch and it whipped back through the windshield of a truck, it was BAD. Synthetic rope still has energy when it breaks but it just drops instead of turning into a flying razor blade.
