PSA: My 'perfect' weekend on the trails in Algonquin Park was a total disaster

Everyone always talks about how great the Algonquin Park trails are in the fall, but my trip two weeks ago was brutal. We hit the Kiosk Loop early Saturday morning, and within 10 kilometers, my buddy's ATV threw a belt right on a muddy hill. Then my own machine started overheating because a beaver dam had flooded the path and we had to push through water that must have been two feet deep. The whole group spent four hours stuck in the bush trying to fix things, and we barely made it back to the truck before dark. I don't get why people rave about that place so much when the trails are that unpredictable. Has anyone else had a trip there turn into a nightmare like that, or do I just have the worst luck?

The Kiosk Loop is known for those beaver floodouts in the spring thaw, not in the fall. Were you running stock ATV tires or something with more aggressive tread? Ive been through that same section after a wet summer and the mud gets thick enough to swallow a wheel. Did you check the local trail conditions before you went, or just show up and hope for the best?
