That mud hole near Pickle Lake nearly swallowed my quad whole

I was riding the B trail system last Sunday and hit a spot I've passed a hundred times. The rain from Thursday had turned that low crossing into a mud pit about 4 feet deep. I didn't even gun it, just rolled in slow and the front end dropped right off a hidden shelf. Had to winch out with a tow strap to a birch tree while standing in water up to my knees. Anyone else find spots that look fine but hide a real killer underneath?

mud pit about 4 feet deep" - I used to just blast through everything but that kind of hidden drop changes your mind real fast.

Man I've been there too. If you're gonna poke through a sketchy hole like that, always walk it first before you drive it. I carry a measuring stick tied to my winch line exactly for this. Just drop it in, feel for the bottom, and you'll know if you're looking at a 4 foot drop or a 6 inch puddle. Saves you from soaking your boots and cussing at a birch tree for an hour.
