Baked beans in a thermos are a scam, learned that the hard way

My dad swore he used to pack hot beans in a thermos for lunch in the 80s and they'd stay perfect. Tried it this morning with a $8 Stanley knockoff, opened it at noon and it was lukewarm mush with a weird skin on top. Has anyone actually gotten this to work or was my old man just lying to me?
