Been opening cans wrong for 20 years until my aunt yelled at me

I always opened my canned beans from the top with the pull tab facing me like a normal person. Last week my aunt June visited from Tulsa and she grabbed the can, flipped it over, and opened it from the flat side. Said all the liquid pools at the bottom so you get less splashing and a cleaner pour. She was right, I tried it with a can of diced tomatoes and barely got a drop on my counter. Has anyone else learned a basic food hack this late in life?

Huh. I mean, sure, it works, but is it really that big of a deal? I just hold the can over the sink and pop the tab, never had a mess bad enough to change my whole technique. @elliotl24 you're making bean juice sound like a crime scene when it's just a little counter splash. Feels like we're overthinking a can of beans here.

That aunt June sounds like a real one. I had a similar moment when my brother in law showed me you can peel a whole head of garlic by shaking it hard between two metal bowls. I'm 47 years old and I'd been picking at those little cloves one by one like a caveman. The can thing is gonna save me from cleaning up bean juice spills on my counter every time I make chili. Sometimes the simplest tricks are the ones that slap you in the face.
