I told everyone to drain their tuna, then my neighbor Ruth in Dayton set me straight
For years I drained the water off canned tuna and tossed it because that is what my mom did and what every recipe says. My 78 year old neighbor Ruth saw me doing it on my porch 3 weeks ago and asked why I was pouring flavor down the drain. She told me to just dump the whole can including the water into the mayo, and the tuna salad came out way less dry and I did not need as much mayo. The water is basically salty tuna broth and it keeps the meat from tasting like sawdust, which is the number one complaint people have about canned tuna. Her rule is one 5 oz can of water packed tuna needs about 2 tbsp of mayo instead of 3. Has anyone tried this with canned chicken or is the liquid in that can too gross to keep?
