My aunt’s comment made me stop seasoning canned beans before cooking

I used to always add salt and spices to my canned black beans right when I opened the can. Then my aunt visited from Austin last month and said I was basically ruining the flavor by not draining and rinsing first. I tried it her way, rinsing with cold water for 30 seconds before heating, and wow the texture is way better now. Anyone else have a family member change how you prep canned stuff?

Oops, I've been the villain in someone's bean story for years and never knew it.

Wait, you were just dumping salt and spice straight into the can without rinsing first? I always rinse mine because the liquid is like slimy bean juice, I thought everyone did that. But now I'm questioning myself. My mom never said anything about it, she just opens the can and heats it up with some butter and garlic powder. Maybe that's why her beans always taste kinda mushy and weird to me. I actually started buying dry beans a few years ago because canned ones always tasted off, but now I'm wondering if I was just doing it wrong the whole time.
