My roommate's one comment about canned chili changed how I eat on a budget

Last month my roommate walked in while I was dumping a can of chili over instant rice and said, "you know you can just eat that straight with some crackers, right?" I laughed it off but then I actually tried it. Turns out I was adding stuff out of habit, not because it tasted better. Now I taste the can first before I add anything. Half the time it's already good enough. Saved me like $4 a week on rice and it's one less pot to wash. Has anyone else realized they were overcomplicating canned meals for no reason?

half the time it's already good enough" is the key part there. what's the other half? is it a salt thing or a texture thing, because those are two totally different fixes.
